Effects of Animal-Assisted Activity for Korea Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairment - Single Subject Design -

Abstract

|
Objectives : This study was aimed at the effects of Animal-assisted activities(AAA) on cognitive function and depression outcomes of elderly with mild cognitive impairment.
Methods : A single-subject A-B-A¡¯ experimental design was used to determine the effects of AAA. The intervention involved 30 minute sessions 3days/week for 5 weeks. Depression outcomes was collected through Self-rating Depression Scale respectively session. Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer¡¯s Disease-Korean version was used to cognitive function before and after the intervention phase.
Results : The results showed that AAA effectively reduced depression on the intervention phase. Word list memory was improved in all trial participants. Common in Word Fluency and Word list recognition did not changes.
Conclusion : This study suggests that AAA could be a valuable method for reducing depression and improving working memory in elderly with MCI, possibly delaying the onset of Alzheimer¡¯s disease.
